A hydrostatic test is a method in which pressure vessels such as pipelines, blow out preventers, valves, plumbing and gas cylinders can be tested for strength and leaks. The test involves filling the vessel or pipe system with a liquid, usually water or corrosion inhibiting solvent and pressurization of the test specimen to the specified test pressure and elapsed time. Results are documented onto a graph chart or data acquisition system. Hydrostatic tests are conducted under the constraints of specific industry specifications such as American Petroleum Institute or Original Equipment Manufacturers. This ensures that the consumer receives safe equipment to put in commission.
